There is an article in the Mail this morning that says the Swiss parliament has approved laws that protect the needs of animals.
Amongst other things, the controversial legislation bans the keeping of single guinea pigs and claims it is inappropriate for them to be cuddled or carried around by children.
What do you think?
Reason for Editing: Changed the title just in case people confused the thread with being about the Swiss breed - PigPog

Well, as for the keeping singles, sometimes you have to. We have two boars who will not accept a companion, they are both totally blind.
As for the not letting children cuddle them etc, my view is as long as its under supervision and the children are tought properly how to stroke/carry them I can't see the problem.
Honestly, sometimes they go a bit too far with these laws!!

I agree with you. Best time to learn how to look after animlas is when you're young. Hopefully it'll help them learn how to look after humans too.....

I thought the law against keeping single pigs was okay until Doris pointed out the single boar thing and I suddenly remembered I have a few of those here! For example, I cant put Vladimir with anyone because he eats them.

Hmmm Valdamir has forgotten hes a herbivore then You have no idea. He's so sweet and innocent when he's on his own and he's even scared of his own shadow. But put him with another boar and he sits in a corner and chatters before getting his teeth out and making new holes. I once had to take both Vlad and Roland to the vet when an introduction attempt failed and Vlad bit Roland in the eye, while Roland tore a hole out of Vlad's leg!

Hufflepuff and Gabriel are a bit like that, but then they can't see bless them. Well Gabriel likes the girls mind you. That said, just recently Gabriel has been going over to see Rhydian and Powell on his little outings, and has taken to talking to them through the bars, so I do wonder if hes mellowed a bit.

Thats a ridiculous law! My 4 year old is more gentle and loving with the pigs than most adults would be. All my piggies adore her! AS do more dogs that both respond more to her than anyone else in household (apart from me of course)! Children are no different than adults in that some are responsible and caring and some arent! How can you bring chilcren up to be gentle and responsible with animals if they cant hold them?

I think I'm all the better as an adult for being allowed pets as a child and I've grown up with a huge respect for living creatures. As you say, your daughter is gentle with her pets and I bet she'll grow up to have a healthy respect for animals.

Another wonderful thing about children is how observant they are! Shannon noticed this morning that Daisy had an eye infection within seconds of coming in shed! I was busy sorting out food and hadnt noticed it yet! She had being hiding mind you until I got food out! Poor little babe, Im pretty sure she has also had a miscarriage this week too!

Poor little piggy Yes, I agree - piggies are excellent pets for children who should be allowed to pick them up and cuddle them, under supervision at first until they are caring and responsible enough to do so on their own They should also be involved in the day to day practicalities of looking after them so they have complete experience of looking after a pet and all that it means. I also think they are excellent pets for some children who have special needs - they rarely bite (the piggies not the children ), they love cuddles and make a whole range of wonderful noises. They don't need to be taken for a walk and they don't leave deposits in your neighbour's garden Nor can you tread in their deposits in your own garden and track it indoors on your hall carpet What more could you ask for?
