Litter trays Diary I am going to keep a litter tray diary and put it on here. You will need to fix it into a corner so that it cannot be knocked over but you must be able to get it out for cleaning. When using a litter tray you must put shavings in it and clean it out every day or more if it is being used by lots of piggies. And of course you can have more than one in the hutch or cage if it is big enough. When your piggie has a poop or wee outside of it you must pick it up and put it to the tray so that the piggie can learn that that is were it is meant to go. Also when you see the piggie use the tray giving it a treat can encourage it to do it again. Day one will be 29/03/2008 and i will post about it at the end of the day. Tanya -------------------------------------------------------- Edit: Tanya also has a litter tray diary for baby and young guinea pigs here. -- PigPog xx

This is going to be interesting. What brand did you buy? I saw two types, but wasnt sure what they'd be like (note to self, must go to PAH or the corn store and see for myself). How high is the lip at the front that they have to back into (presumably, as my pigs seem to reverse into the corners).

I have set up two cages in my front room. One with one piggie in it and one with two piggies in it so that we can see how it gose with one piggie or more. The top one has a neutered boar in it and a young pet sow. And the bottom one has a sow in it that has now weened her babies and is in need of a rest and feeding up. I will up date tonight let you all know how dayone has gone. Tanya

Litter trays Diary Day two Top cage, Well i have been moring more poo and wee for them to day and i have to say that they dont seem to have the hang of it yet but it is long da two. Ben the boar has spent most of the day sat in it. and the sow still has not gone anywhere near it. I am still having to put a lot of the p&w in to the tray for them.
Bottom cage, She seems to be using it a bit more as i found that she was going in the same place most of the time so moved the tray to where she was going. so i think that she is going to get the hang of it in the end, but long time will tell. She is going in the tray more than the piggies in the top cage
I think that if your pig or piggies go in the same place a lot that they may get the hang of it sooner. Next up date 31/03/2008 Tanya

Litter trays Diary Day three Top cage Well i have had to take out the sow from this cage as she was being a bit of a cow. so just the boar in there now. Ben is doing lots of P&W in the tray but lots out of it to. Bottom cage She is still P&W in the tray and out of it but more in the tray now. So as we now have a boy in the top cage and a girl in the bottom cage it looks like it is going to be a battle of the sexes, to see who will get the hang of the tray. Litter trays Diary Day four Battle of the sexes Well the boar has not got the hang of it yet but is doing better. As for the Sow looks like she may win a she it doing lots and lots of pops in it and now a lot of the wees are getting in to it too. We will have to see how they both get tomorrow. Next up date 02/04/2008 I hope that you all like this subject know one has said anything about it for a day or two. Please do be letting me know what you think and if you all want to know anything about how they are doing. Tanya Reason for Editing: typo. i so can not spell

Well we all know girls are much more clever and hygenic than boys! It's really interesting! I think I might give it a go myself when I eventually make some C&C cages. I would imagine babies are easier to train than adults though.

I am really enjoying your Litter Trays Diary, Tanya. Even though Mr M and myself no longer keep piggies of our own. It really is interesting to see how this venture is progressing. I'm not surprised the sow is doing better at things. We all know what boys - sorry, boars are like I wonder, if you put a lid on the tray would the boar use it more just so he could leave the lid up.............. Just a thought.

A tray test for babies would be a good idea - I'd be interested to know if they are more easily trained! I am thinking of "can't teach an old pig new tricks" possibly?
