I wonder, if you put a lid on the tray would the boar use it more just so he could leave the lid up.............. Just a thought. I'm really enjoying the experiment too. It's interesting. And I've just remembered I meant to look at trays when I was in PAH today. . . which I came out of with a larger size Chube than their present one, and a packaway tunnel for when they're out in the garden. These boys are really spoilt!

Litter trays Diary Day five Well i do not think that the boar is ever going to get the hang of it as he is just using it as a bed. he will no longer wee or poo in it and just sleeps in it. On the other side the sow is now doing 99% of P&W in the tray and has the hang of things. So it is looking like the Sow is going to win hands down. I will take this to the end of the week to see how they both do. Next week i will be setting up new cages with babies in them to see if you are better starting them of with it when they are little. so i will set up four cages what would you all like to see in them. One sow in one, one boar in one, and two sows in one and two boars in one then. Please let me know. Next up date 03/04/2008 I can still keep the older boar going on with it to see how long it takes him to get the hang of it if you all would like but i do think that he is. as he is just to stuck in his ways. Well, it's nice to know he's making use of it, even if not for the right purpose!
Yes, I'm interested in seeing how the next stage of the experiment goes.
The other question is: does it make life any easier for you if they use it?

If you're happy to continue with this experiment Tanya, then I think it would be a good idea. You are already finding interesting differences between the sexes (albeit you may just have a lazy boar who is not very bright), and further research with the babies may well bring good results that could be of use in the future. I wonder, have you thought of applying for a government grant................

I'm trying to think of the right angle for grant funding... It could be someone like the Sustainable Development Commission for a sustainable consumption grant, on the question ' are litter trays an unnecessary waste of plastic', or possible a sustainable waste grant on the basis of 'will the use of litters trays reduce the amount of part-used piggy bedding going to a) landfill or b) composting. On the whole, I'd favour the waste option.....

Sounds like an Essex County Council initiative - worth at least 10 new employees

Litter trays Diary Day six Boar cage Well he has spent most of the day in and out of the tray and i am still having to put his P&W into the tray for him like a slave. Just like a man to get the female to do all the work for him, next he will be calling for his rights to the sky control.LOL Sow cage She is now using the tray for the lot. So there you go girls, Sows are brighter then Boars. (Or at least the one in the top cage). She will now use it even if it is clean. I am now going to keep her going in the cage with the tray to see if it cuts down on the cost of bedding. Next up date and conclusion to the litter trays and older piggies on day seven 04/04/2008 I was thinking that i am going to start the babies litter tray tests with one of my baby boars that has to live on his own as he is a longhair and going to be a show piggie, for one of the cages and two baby sows for the second cage. What do you all think? Tanya Reason for Editing: I still can not spell

Litter trays Diary
I was thinking that i am going to start the babies litter tray tests with one of my baby boars that has to live on his own as he is a longhair and going to be a show piggies of one of the cages and two baby sows for the second cage. What do you all think. Tanya That's a good idea! We'll see if a longhaired boar has the advantage and is more keen to use it (maybe longhaired piggies more hygiene conscious??) than two sows? Two sows v single longhaired boar - let the battle commence!

You may actually get better results with a younger boar - not so set in his ways. I wonder if neutering makes a difference too...........let's not go there
