First thing this morning I was woken by knocking at the door. It was a young girl who helps out with the piggies after school etc. She had a limp aby in her arms belonging to a neighbour of hers. 'She still moving' were the only words I could understand she was so upset. The little thing was a bag of bones. At first I thought she was shivering or convulsing til I saw the sac appear and realised she was in labour. She coudn't hold herself upright or get her head round. I once read an article I think by Peter Gurney about using fingernails like her teeth and hooking the baby teeth. There was resistance for a second and I was scared to pull but then out it slid. Mum was convulsing it seemed and was gone before the bub was rubbed over. I thought it was pre eclampsya but as I checked her found this no top teeth to speak of so how would she eat or drink? Bub has survived and weighs 68gms. Is drinking from kitten bottle and I have brought Willow through to be his snuggle mum. What are chances of him surviving do you think?

Oh wow! That IS so sad. 0.0 You can just try your best for the little one like I did for the baby bunny. I wish I was closer. If he survived I would have loved to take him! I have a thing for White Cavies! Goodluck with them!

Thats awful If the baby is reasonably healthy it may be ok, let us know how it goes The fact that he/she is eating has got to be a good thing. Is the baby eating at all?

Tosca, what a truly dreadful situation to find yourself in.
Sounds like you remained as calm as was possible in the situation and saved the babes life. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and will say a prayer for the little one.
Thank goodness you were there though but the question still remains - how could anyone allow this sort of thing to happen?
If anyone can help this little one, I am sure you can ;D

Poor piggy I feel so sad for her at least she new some one cared before she passed As her front teeth are so bad I would be concerned about her back ones thats where the problem started probably a poor diet or none! I hope the bub survives you have given it a fighting chance I will have everything crossed!!!! Do you know if the owners have more pigs as in the boar who got her pregnant?

How is the baby today Tosca? I wish I could offer some really useful advice but I don't have the knowledge or experience However you do seem to be able to cope in these situations by using a mixture of gut instinct and common sense. Well done you

Well 'Miss Daisy Mae' is doing really well so far.Unfortunately the kitten bottle I bought doesn't have measurements on it so I just have to let her take what she wants. She has also had a nibble of spinach, newspaper and my top. She has lost 2 grms but I believe that is usual. Willow is being very loving and patient even when the little one trys to suckle. It is 9 weeks since she had a little one so I dont think she will have any milk will she? My main worry is the bub has not had any mothers milk. Will this lower her chances of survival?

You could try giving the baby some lactol or complan to supplement her if you are worried.

Oh my goodness. I don't know what to say really because that poor sow must just have been starving. I agree with Lisa because that little girl deserves a medal for bringing her to you. And you deserve a medal for helping the baby into the world and nursing her so well. I think Miss Daisy Mae is a beautiful name for her.

Yes, what Pigpog said is exactly right. You've done so very well to not lose the baby too during such a traumatic birth.
Good luck with bringing this new baby up.

Hi Tosca, First may I say, well done you! It is not easy to cope with such a tragic and dramatic event. Like the others I agree that it must have taken a lot for that littlw girl to have scooped up that piggy and taken her to you. I do have concerns that that family may have more piggies. As for the pup I agree with Bob some complan or lactol would be good for fattening it up and giving it just that little extra. I myself use lactol. I do not think you need to worry about the little one and she will just get stronger and stronger every day. By bringing Willow in it gave the little one just what it needed. It does not matter that she has no milk just that she is there. As for her taking what she needs from the bottle, that is exactly the way to go with her. As you say, she has started eating solid food as well. One thing I would say is dont let her have any fresh fruit or vegetables for about 4-5 weeks because without ever having her mothers milk in her system she may be more prone to diarohea. May I please again say how well you coped in such a stressful situation, you should be so proud of yourself. Tanya

Thanks for all the advice. I have mixed a little baby rice with her aptimil and she has had a go at it. I will give Willow her greens seperate now thanks Tanya. As all the girls are in the kitchen due to disruption of new shed little Miss keeps going up on her hind legs to look over top of corrugate. She seems very bright so far. As for her mum the little background I have is she was bought from pet store around 7/8 weeks ago. No after care support or education given there then. Apparently there is an upset little boy involved but I haven't spoken to them personally yet as I don't want to seem like I am barging in guns blazing without the facts.
Reason for Editing: wrote lactol replaced with aptimil

Apparently there is an upset little boy involved but I haven't spoken to them personally yet as I don't want to seem like I am barging in guns blazing without the facts. These situations are never that cut and dried, are they? You are doing the right thing by treading carefully on this one. Sometimes the gentler approach achieves much more.......... Keep us updated on the little one, we're all hoping and praying she makes it. She is obviously in the very best of hands
