Hi all! I have a short haired Guinea Pig, well at least I thought I did, at the pet shop he had short fur, but suddenly it has began growing at a rappid rate. Its now quiet long fur that I have noticed is falling out. I checked the end of the hairs that were falling out and they had no dry skin at the end, its not falling out in clumps, but when I brush him alot does come out- is this normal? I gave him a bath to get the loose fur out and when dry it seemed to not come out as much. Has he got something wrong with him? Or is it just maulting?

Hi Guineapigz! It's way too hot isn't it? It's the time of year when they moult generally. Some pigs start in the spring, others in the summer, while I haved a couple who seem to moult during the winter! To be on the safe side, give him a bath in some neem shampoo from Gorgeous Guineas. The neem shampoo is for pigs with skin problems so if he has got something going on, then this should ease it. Does he scratch a lot? Have a look at the skin section on the medical companion. It doesn't sound like he's got a skin problem, but have a read just in case you spot something that looks familiar.

Thanks for such a quick reply. Yes its been very hot lately, and my Guinea Pig seems to be more lazey than ever! He does not have bad skin, I don't think so cus its not scabby or any thin' like that. He occasionaly scratches himslef, and bites he fur, not too often though. Just seen that you are in the UK, so am I, and that means that the product you recomended might be within my area! Thanks, will deffinately try it out on both my Guinea Pigs.

Glad to hear it's not his skin. I thought I'd ask just in case.. I've been known to miss skin problems. Gorgeous Guineas are a mail order company, so you can order online. They're aromatherapy based shampoos and way better than shop shampoos. They have shampoo for boars, babies, sows, skin problems....

I think a trip the vet to be on the safe side sounds like a plan to me. It will put your mind at rest. Smooth coat piggies have fur and long coated piggies have hair that is always growning. Tanya

Yes, I will be sure to do just that. Can you grow your Guinea Pigs fur long? Or is it just certain types that have their fur long? *new to piggies really*

Only the coronet, sheltie, peruvian, alpaca, texel, merino and lunkarya have long hair. The rest have fur that just grows to about 2" to 3". Tanya
