Hi all! I noticed that sometimes while in the cage, my Guinea Pig starts vibrating, he sometimes does this when I pick him up. Please could someone tell me what he is doing? Thanks, GuineaPigz!

They vibrate for a few reasons: 1. Dominance Does he live with or near another pig? Boars in particular vibrate to display dominance, and some sows also do this either to be bossy or when they're in season. 2. Mating Boars will rumble and vibrate a lot if they're near a sow in season. 3. Strange sounds If a pig hears an odd sound, they stop what they're doing and rumble. Try jangling your keys - your pig will rumble at you.

Thanks for that. Yes, sometimes he does live with another boy Guinea Pig, but I have no sows with me. So it must be dominance. Or strange sounds

Ah well, if it's two boys together then it's probably dominance. Mine regularly climb all over eachother and rumble a lot. Try the key jangling thing (not near his ear though!), it's fun.

If he's vibrating when you pick him up and he's quite young it probably means he likes it but doesnt know how to whicker and purr yet. George used to do that a lot, and then again when I gave them their first bath! (He doesnt do that now!)
There was a thread about it a little while ago....

My boys usually do that at random times or when they can see or smell the girls. But nothing to serious.

Yeah, he also makes some other strange noices but when I try to find out what they are on google, none of them sound like what he is doing. Its kind of like the happy one, but with lots of pauses. Hard to explain...

How long have you had them? It sounds a bit like my experiences with Fred & George.... see the thread on 'what is he trying to tell me'. I think as long as you know that they're saying things, you will eventually work out what they mean!!

Yeah, thanks I will do. After all you don't want him being angry and you think that hes happy! I think communication with your piggys is very important. I have had them since 8th June, so about 2 months, although before I did alot of research about them to get things right. So I am abit new to caring for them, but its amazing how quick I have bonded with them.

Yes I think it was about two months before George stopped vibrating and started making happy noises. I seriously considered taking him to the vet at one stage - I think I'd have been a bit embarrassed if I had!
