I usually do a couple things that I believe helps them out a little bit.... During the warm season and summertime and early fall and such I usually take a water bottle(could be an old soda bottle clean it then fill with water) then put it in the freezer to let it freeze. Then after it is frozen I just set it in the cages and then they usually just lay by it or try licking it. Also if you have big hidey houses or something like that and get like the bug juice bottles the really little ones or something freeze that then put it in the houses so it acts like an air conditioner. For the winter when it gets really cold I usually put in some extra fleece so they can go ahead and cuddle in that. I haven't tried it yet but I heard that if you have socks...fill it with rice...and just heat it a little bit it will be like a little heater and then the piggies will just curl right on up to it. (if anyone has other ideas...they are welcome ) Sorry I hope it's ok to go on with starting all these threads hope no one minds .

I'd heard about the cold water bottle idea, but the warm rice is a great idea. I know they do these chemical handwarmers for outdoorsy type people, and there are microwaveable ones too, but using rice in a sock is probably exactly the same. Great idea.

All great ideas. I'd wrap the iced bottle up in a tea towel or something though or it might be a case of those humerous movies where someone tries to lick an ice sculpture....

Great idea about the rice. Do you think that is something that could be used for orphan pups. Even though they are inside and warm perhaps the direct warmth to snuggle to would feel a bit more like mum?

I don't see why not...I mean for the piggies it's fine and I'm sure young pups would love the little extra warmth. I can see them curling right up to it already

I agree, I reckon the babies would love it.

When I decided to expand my little family of piggies, I decided also to get them the biggest shed I could afford (or comfortably fit in my little garden). My biggest worry was keeping them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I spent ages looking at insulation, air conditioning, even underfloor heating. (I know... possibly a little excessive!) I found a fantastic insulation material, that actually works both ways and keeps the internal temperature even. It keeps the inside cool in the summer by reflecting the heat and warm in the winter by containing the heat inside with what looks like tiny little bubble wrap with tin foil either side. It's called Thermawrap or Airtec. I wondered if anyone else has used it, what they think of it. I read the rest of this threat and love the idea of the frozen bottles, but has anyone used hot water bottles or is this a big no-no. I saw the heat pads/cool pads in PAH but at £20 each and 6 piggies, thats 6 hot/6 cold = £240. Does anyone recommend these? thanks for your comments. Lisa

Well...I'm not so sure bout the hot water bottle. I suppose maybe but I would think it would be to hot...like with the rice in the sock it brings off a warm feeling...and is also covered with a sock. But I'm not completely sure. I haven't really bothered I suppose to try it. I think it would be uncortable for them... Buuuut, your shed seems very nice.

I probably agree about the water bottles unless I made a fleece to go round it. I have taken loads of photos of the shed and cant wait til its finished. hopefully should be complete by bank holiday weekend. I will put pictures together and when I can work out how to attach photos I will post them on here.

I wouldn't use a hot water bottle because if it bursts or is punctured then the piggies will be burned. I recently read an article about a woman who had one burst on her lap and she suffered I think it was third degree burns. Just imagine what that would do to a piggy! I think piggy water should be kept for drinking personally.
