Hi,
I just thought i had to share this with you. My friend and fellow breeder - Tanya, cuteandcuddlycavies - rang me today to ask to borrow cages for rescue piggies she was picking up tonight. She rang me on the way back with them asking for my help. She picked up 16 piggies all in a dreadful state. One had new babies (2) which at the moment look well, but she had some dead babies still in her womb and died on the journey home before Tanya could get a vet to her. The babies will be given hand fed puppy milk of a spoon til they are feeding for themselves, but to be honest they will be lucky if that works for them. There was another mother with two babies, both babies were bald with mange and severely bloated from being fed large quantities of cabbage. We have bathed them in a special shampoo and they will NOT be fed veg of any description for a while, if they make it. There are four heavily pregnant sows, which HAD to be bathed, we would normally never dream doing this at this stage, however they had scabs, feaces stuck solid to there claws and feet (leaving red raw marks undereneath) and had some small balding patches. One of the pregant sow haw two young daughters, about 10 weeks, both could be pregnant!!! Shw was obviously mated on the birth of her daughters. All the boars were bathed, again feaces stuck solid to there feet and small bald patches and mahy areas of scabs and fungal infection. THey are all clean now indoors in cages to be quarentined. They were all very hungry and some looked well underweight. Tanya has a big task on her hands and I am glad I was able to offer some help. One of the sows she was told was on her *7th* litter, absolutlely appauling. We hope they make it and that suitable homes can be found for them when they are back to health.
