About once a month, I scoop out Popcorn from his cage, tuck him in his travler, and run a shallow luke warm bath for him. He is a long haired and loves to roll around in the muck, so the bath really gives him a good soak. I use a ferret shampoo from the pet store that smells like lemons and leaves his fur silky. After his bath is done, I towel dry him and reward him with a snack (a carrot his fave!) I lay him down on some newspaper and take out the scissors. This is the part he doesnt like... I think he is obsessed with his fur ;D But it has to be done, or elce he'll become a huge tangled mess. I like to cut it pretty short because it grows back REALLY quick. It also gives him some freedom to see better My only concern is that the piles of fur that I cut off seems to look like a tasty meal to him! He likes to EAT his HAIR. I find this disgusting and it doesnt look to healthy either. I try to get him to stop but as soon as I turn he's back at it. Is this normal?

Ferret shampoo - now I never knew ferrets had their own shampoo!!! I have a big girl called Silvia who has a "rat's tail" - a long bit of fur on her bottom. We trimmed her rat's tail a couple of weeks ago as she was dragging it around and getting it tangled. She also tried to eat the fur once it was trimmed off. Unfortunately I can't give you an answer to this one because I don't know why they do it either! I hope someone else here might have an idea because this is a really good question.

I have had a few longhair piggies that like the taste of their own hair and I usually let them get on with it. Once they are a barber you cant normally stop them. I know of a couple of longhair breeders that actually shave their pigs coats off during the sumer and I have done this with my last long hair Zac. I shaved about an inche of from his bum all the way around to his back legs so it looked like an upside down triangle. He was very impressed and knot free for a very long time. I had to leave a small skirt on going all the way around so it would cover the shaven bit.

Forgive me if this sounds daft, but will eating hair gum up their works It doesn't seem too... Thistle gave himself a funky hair cut, I had to neaten it up for him as he left a great big long bit right at the back and it looked right silly. (Thistle is a merino). Thistle has also give Bod a haircut (Texel/merinoey thingi) and he did do a reasonable job on Bod. Its just one of those things they do I am afraid.

My shorts chew my longs all the time, it doesn't seem to have an adverse effect on any of them except it is hard to work out if the "barboured" pig is actually enjoying it or not??
