Thanks Lisa. Right, I went to the market today and bought two huuuuuge bunches of parsley which is guaranteed to keep them quiet for a while. I also got two large bunches of coriander - they've never had it before so this will be interesting. Can they eat asparagus? I bought some at the market just in case. If they can't have it then Simon will just cook it for us.

Yes, they can eat asparagus. Feed it before a show as it (like cellery) makes them smell nice

Well the coriander didn't stand a chance as it was mauled to death in less than five minutes. The asparagus wasn't as popular but it also didn't touch the sides and disappeared in short order. So now I need to add them both to the feeding guide. Anything I should know, like gassiness, vitamin c content, etc?

great to read all the advice !! My garden is swamped with mint so i now have a use for some of it there are only so many dishes you can use mint in and potatoes stick to my hips ha ha !! Does mint have to be limited ?? I dont want no upset tums ! boys and girlies LOVE carrotts and cucumber. I did get them some corn on the cob ( stephen has given up moaning said they better fed than him ;D ) i have never seen such a fuss the corn didnt stand a chance it was attacked ! worth the pennys, Interesting that its fattening may have to watch that altho tilly needs to put on pounds so may seperate her for a hour or so and let her have some alone ! ( just hope she doesnt tell the others ) They enjoyed the beetroot altho i didnt enjoy having red fingers for the day haha !! AWWW how daft am i ?? I prepare my veg a bit to like a human i think .... i had been chopping off all the leavey bits on the celery and just using the NICE bits ....... durrrrr think i need to think like a pig a bit more dafty !!! sarah

My boys like the leafy but on the celery even better than the stalks! They eat plenty of mint which is probably just fine; dont forget to let your piggies have the outsides of the corn, (tassles and husks) it's the bit we eat that's the fattening bit (even without the butter ). It sounds like you need to grow some veg in your garden next year because mine eat all sorts of leaves and its ever so much cheaper to put seeds in the ground than buy them at the shop! You can also put the seeds in pots and tubs and just go for the leafy bits, not the full grown veg. I really do need to find time to put my 'gardening for guinea pigs' article together....

Does anyone know anything about beetroot, asparagus and coriander? I need to know what sort of viatmin c content they have (high or low basically!), if they cause bloating or another negative side effect when fed too often, and how often to feed. Great idea ES, looking forward to "Gardening for Guinea Pigs"! ;D

Beetroot and Asparagus BEETROOT Most Piggies love Beetroot and it is very good for them. But you must top and tail them as those bit are bad for them. And it will make thair poo and wee red. ASPARAGUS Piggies can eat Asparagus but it will make thair wee and poo smell very very very very very bad. not to much as can give them bloat Both are ment to be high in vit C Hope this is of help. well here goes ! Got the raddish seeds planted. and guess what ! have bought carrots, beetroot and dandelions to grow ! may be a disaster but worth a try. My dad says its really easy.... but im not the best gardener. I am growing them in pots rather than my garden as dont have a patch i can use really. Dandelions are going to be a laff i bet out of them all they will deffo grow ;D and i wonder how many people say i need to get the weeeds out of that pot ha ha !! sarah

Well done! The carrots will be really useful - sow the seeds fairly generously as I've had some which have been a bit slow to come up (i.e. never). The good thing about carrots is that you can take a few of the seedlings and young ones out (to 'thin' them) over a period of time and the piggies can eat the thinnings! After what people have advised about beetroot, I wouldnt do that now with the beetroot thinnings. Both of these take a long time to grow the roots to a worthwhile size - keep them in a fairly cool place though or they'll try to flower. Also recommended for pots - Swiss Chard seeds. Get 'Bright Lights' variety and they come up all pretty colours too! (I'll do my gardening for guinea pigs article when I've finished these two reports I'm working on!)
