Hey Everyone! Just have a question that i wonder if anyone can help me with. My dog has just been diagnosed with kennel cough and i have read online that it can be transfered between species so am worried about my piggies catching it! I asked the vet and he said they cant catch the disease from dogs. So now Im confused!! I want to believe my vet and know you cant always believe everything you read online but several sites say it is transferable, just wondered if anyone here had any ideas/experience??!! Really don't want my little boys ending up sick too!

Hi I have looked into this myself and contacted a vet for advice as I have indoor pigs and a dog. In some cases yes it can be transferred but highly unlikely and is rare, I would try your best to keep them separate just as a precaution, if your pigs are outside and aren't in contact with your dog then they will be fine. Just keep a extra close eye on them but I think all will be ok here is part of the reply I recieved from the vet; Guinea pigs are susceptible to the bacteria ´Bordetella Bronchiseptica´, which is one of the most common causes of respiratory infections in guinea pigs. It is the same bacteria that causes kennel cough in dogs and so can be passed onto guinea pigs. Also the disease takes on a different form so the symptoms would be different snotty nose, runny eyes and noisy breathing spot any of these and off to the vets for some antibiotics
