I've had my two boys for about 7 weeks now and they don't get along great. They don't have any serious fights, but the bigger one, Ben, will sometimes give Sam a nip and Sam tends to make warning noises to Ben if Ben gets too close. Recently, though, I've noticed Sam putting his nose under Ben's chin and Ben lets him do this. What could this gesture mean? Also, tonight Sam looked to be sniffing and maybe even grooming Ben and Ben let him do this, too, but gave him a warning when Sam went on too long. Could they be learning to get along a bit better? I really hope so!

It does sound as though they are trying to get along.
The under the chin thing, the one thats under the chin is being submissive to the one with the head in the air, Figgy and Star do this quite often, with Figgy (the larger of the two strangely!) being the submissive one.
The grooming is definably a good sign.

Thanks for your comments. I was wondering if the nose under the other's chin meant submission. Although I notice Sam doesn't let his submissiveness get in the way of nicking Ben's veggies! Another thing I notice is when Ben has a run around the cage, he'll bump into Sam as if trying to get Sam to play, but Sam doesn't like it and gives him a warning squeal. Could Ben be playing or is that a bit of aggression?

Fred has been doing that to George, bumping into him as if he wants to play, but George hasnt been feeling up to it while he's been ill. When they were both well they would both hare off round the cage and sometimes come nose to nose, and other times manage to avoid each other. It's a great game to watch! They did it from the start but then they're litter mates, whereas yours are getting to know each other, from what I understand.
It sounds to me like they're getting along ok, but I'm a novice!

oh, they'll say if they don't want to play. Harry Jnr quite often wants to urm oh how can I put this, be very cuddly with Dudley, but if Dudders doesn't fancy a cuddle at that moment in time he says so with a squeal!!

I did buy my boys from the same place (at a local farm) but the guinea pigs were all in the same huge pen, so I suppose these two could have just avoided eachother and now that they're in a cage together, they have had to learn how to get along! It was quite funny this morning - instead of Ben trying to get Sam to play, this time it was Sam trying to get Ben to play! I haven't seen sam do this. I don't think they'll ever be best mates, but I'm so glad they are making steps to get along. ;D Now, I just wish they would be more obliging to me when I want a cuddle. When I pick Ben up for a cuddle, he spends the whole time on my lap trying to get back into the cage. Sam is a bit better, but only sits for 5 mins. Maybe Ben will never be a cuddler. I'm glad they have eachother!

I think you'll probably get more experienced people than me saying about the variety of ways which piggies have to respond to us humans. Mine sometimes want a long time on the lap, other times they want to get back quickly. They used to be quite quick when i first got them then they started to relax and enjoy it. But they both like to get back to the cage for a pee....which is very polite of them, so one of the things they might be fidgety about is that.

ES is right, it could be they need a pee, being young they only have little bladders Also, it does take time for them to get used to you - and yes some piggies love to sit on you and be fussed (Nimrod is one of those!!) others aren't so taken with it (Lupin-Buckmore is on of those - he'd rather watch you from his lair! )
