This Morning I woke to fing a baby amongst my four girls. It was a complete surprise. Mum is a 3- 4 month old, long haired pig. and looking back now I had thought she was getting heavy, but put it down to her just building adult weight. I must have bought her preggers as all of my girls, definately are girls.
I would love some advice on how to keep this pup alive. Mother and baby seem to be doing fine, and baby is suckling regularly. I have separated them from the rest of the group.
Should I take them to the vet and get them checked out? any advice would be greatly appreciated xx

Hiyah! What a lovely surprise  I'm sure someone will be along soon who knows about piggy breeding, but in the meantime, I'm sure nature will take it's course if they both seem well. Good luck! xx |

the little one is absolutely fine. Have not handled it much yet so dont even know if its a boy or girl!! in a bit of a quandry as if its a boy, i may not be able to keep him. So until i sex the little mite, i wont name it.......so i dont get too attached!!!!
I will give it a good check tomorrow, so will keep you all posted.

Hi Nikki,
one of mine just had babies and I was the same as you. I was totally prepared until they actually appeared.
As long as the baby is suckling, she should be fine. Make sure mum has lots of good veggies and hay and you'll find the baby will start to nibble at the veggies and hay in a day or so too, so keep them quiet and warm and mum should do all the rest naturally. Good luck and come back with any questions you have, the will always be someone along to help you.
oh, and congratulations on your new addition.

I would just leave mam and baby to get on with it. Mam will be giving her all the nutrients she needs, and she will be eatting within a day or so depending on how well she gets.

Lisa has covered all the important stuff, though its a good idea to weigh the pup. Anything between 70 and 90 grammes is considered a good weight.

The little one is a girl, im extemely happy, as it means she can stay as pert of the group!!!!!
At what stage can I re-introduce them back to the group? and do you think they will both be accepted?

I would wait a couple of weeks as you have got them seperate, just to ensure that baby is eating ok.

Hi again, Just for an update, mum and baby are doing really well. Pie, as i have named her is even eating solids and she is only 5 days old, she is beautiful. Thank you for those people that gave me your advice. Quick question....... I have been giving mum and pup 20-25 minutes of time with the others for the last couple of days. To get the babs used to the girls and vice versa. Mum seems to forget her duties she enjoys being back so much. Pie also loves investigating everything, and having the space to run and pop corn!! The girls to seem to get a bit rough with her at times especially the alpha girl. they are very inquisitive, Is this normal? I stop play time if they get too rough, is this just them sorting out the hierarchy?  ? any advice appreciated xx |

Pie may be a bit confused by all these adults and doesn't know who to go to for milk....that might make them cross with her. There probably will be a bit of a fuss when you reintroduce them, just make sure Pie has places to hide and keep a close eye on her when they do all go together (like tubes and boxes). It's strange they all react differently, some sows would just try to mother her, depends on their temperament. It's rare that they will do any damage to a baby, or each other, but I'd wait til the little one is about three weeks before putting them back in for good.

I agree with Amanda, sows react differently. I have never removed a pregnant sow from a group before. Here is the last two litters I had in the with their mam and auntys.... As you can see from the blood they were born in the pen, Mammy Nina has it on her bum too!  Little bit older and braver  Lowri and Laban in with their Mam Lily-Pad and aunty Loba  Getting milk with a nosey Kanika peeping out of the tube  With the baby goldens, the two cream satins and loba the chocolate have never been mothers and werent that keen at first on the babies but they wouldnt hurt them, just nudge them away from them, if the piglets where going for milk at the wrong pig. With the himalayan bubs, everyone just got on with their usual life and nudged them away if they were annoying one another. They loved to pop corn and would set everyone off. Emma x |
