I was given a bag of apples last week handpicked of a tree I know not to feed them too often due to the acidity but they do love them My Nan's friend has also given me cucumbers in the past (although not lately) that are too bent and knobbly for humans (that sounds so wrong?!) but are fine for piggies. On an another note a while back we where driving down this road last year probably (this does have a point) and I noticed cucumbers for sale, drove back round and they had several misshaped cucumbers on sale for donation only, lucky piggies How did I get from apples to cucumbers?

Thinking of treats for piggies!!
Misshapen veg are just fine for my piggies, also the bits that have gone to far for me - chard and lettuce gone to seed is just fine for them!
Mind you, I had some of my own misshapen carrots for tea last night - delicious!

Indeed, how lovely when someone gives you some fruit or veg for the piggies just because it's a nice thing to do. Nobody has ever done this for me yet though.... Well spotted on the cucumber stall, by the way! You shall now be known as Eagle Eye Cashmincal. I do see some stalls by the roadside over here in Jersey, but we never stop at them... mainly because they're usually selling our famous Jersey spuds. 3 legged carrot, Toni! Perhaps it was evolving to go somewhere. I wish we had a vegetable patch. It would require Snailspace and Mr Snailspace to let us have a patch of grass dug up for it, and I can't see that happening. But we're going to start growing our own herbs on our patio garden - thanks to some advice from ES here - which Simon has always wanted to do for the cooking, and the piggies will get some tasty treats too!

Misshapen Veg are brilliant. We only eat organic fruit and veg (from a local organic box scheme, my parents garden and our garden) - and it's obvious how much selection / persuasion is done by the supermarkets to get perfect looking fruit and veg (perfectly straight carrots, ideal angle bananas etc). However the organic fruit and veg, whilst it doesn't look as good, certainly tastes infinitely better and is sooooooooo much better for you without all those nasty pesticides and chemicals.... so our piggies get an all organic, mostly misshappen fruit and veg feast!
And finally, a cautionary tale which shows the true value of eating organic (and yes i know i'm being a bit preachy):
Our organic box supplier told us recently that the reason organic mushrooms are a browner colour than supermarket non-organic stuff is down to the chemicals they use to keep the mushrooms looking bright and white for the supermarket shelves. Apparently they use Formaldehyde (yes that's right, the same stuff they use to preserve dead bodies) & Chlorine to do this.... i'm sorry - but i do NOT want to eat something that has had exposure to these sorts (or indeed any sorts) of chemicals.
I'm sure i'll probably post more on my preachy lifestyle at some point... and possibly explain what made us do it (but i'll save all that for another day)...
I'm off to peel some nobbly carrots! ;D
