So, although our pair of piggies come in over night and sleep in a smaller but warmer hutch in the house, i had to make some more DIY alterations to the outdoor "daytime" hutch over the weekend!
With all the rain we had, we noticed the fundamental flaw - which was that (although the hutch is right next to the house) rain can get in and make the bedding totally soaked! The whole front sections of the hutch were soaking wet, right down to the wood (suffice to say Pinny and Gigs remained indoors for the duration of the rain). So (once the rain had subsided) i cleared out the hutch, dried out the wood with Mrs DC's hair drier (don't tell her! (and it is HER hair drier as i don't need one (due to a general lack of hair))). I then set about the necessary weather proofing alterations.
The girls now have a lovely awning constructed from a tarpaulin attached to the wall of the house and running down (at a slight angle for water drain off) to a couple of wooden battons which stretch out about a foot from the front of the cage. I'm hoping that this overhang will help keep the rain out! (although the sun is out now (although it's cold) and we probably won't get to test it for a few days!
Anyway - sorry for my long and boring updates... but i'm on my own in our office and feeling a bit lonely! lol

i know what you mean DC my piggys outside hutch got soked in rain so i was outside today doing my DIY ;D i had some pond linner left over from making my wildlife pond, so i attached it to top of hutch, so it can hang down the frount of hutch in bad weather at a angle so rain is diverted away from them. i had to do it this way or it would block out all the light and that would not be good for them either. in time im going to get waterproof fabric and make a cover for the whole hutch and line it with something warm, i have got to make my own cover because you cant buy one that fits a 7 and 1/2 foot hutch ;D my hubby says i worry more about piggys than i do him
