I went to see the lady from the hedgehog sanctuary last week, and we got chatting about how to become a charity (which she's done for the hedgehogs).
She says I'd need three committee members (secretary and treasurer included), and to write a letter to myself disclaiming my personal pets from the charity (they would belong to me as an individual). I could then claim donations, become affiliated with the JSPCA, and become pretty much the Jersey guinea pig sanctuary. Apparently, she says there used to be one but it closed down some time ago.
Simon (my fiance and co-admin Harlequin on here) told me tonight that if it's really what I want to do, he'll help me get the paperwork done, and he and Snailspace (his mum) would be on the committee as treasurer and secretary. Both of my parents (Meggiepiggy and Mr_M) have also agreed to be on the committee.
I could rehome guinea pigs from here and keep the sick, elderly or difficult ones here with me! I'd be going to the animal open days on the island and helping the JSPCA. I could do home checks and things before rehoming pigs!
I'm calling my vet tomorrow to ask him if I'd get discounted fees as a charity.
I'm quite excited really - I'd be the charity for guinea pigs on the island! Of course we need to let some of our pigs drop off first and perhaps get down to about 10 pets before I can really start, but that gives me a couple of years or so to get things together, have my outdoor aviary built to accommodate safer runs, and generally spruce the shed up with a new hutch block and get things in place.
We'll be thinking about names for the sanctuary soon, and I thought it would be nice for Simon and I to come up with a selection and then put it to a vote so you guys can choose it for me. It would be lovely to have a name picked by my wonderful members.
