Well I figured we could always start a thread where you could use easy homemade or very cheap ways for your guineapigs to still have fun. A few I have thought out are the soda 12-pack boxes fill it with hay or anything use it as a tunnel, papar bags just lie them on the floor and they will surprisngly play with those(little things amuse them I suppose ) Hmm also the jingle balls and bird toys with the bells at the end they seem to like ringing...hm hm hm Well I can't think of anything else but there are hundred and hundred I'm sure of things like this...anyone else have anything that has been succesful?

Mine munch on toilet roll middles. Some people suggest not using these due to the glue they use to still the paper around the roll, but mine have played with the roll middles for years with no problems.

This old football makes a good hay holder and an excellent hiding place.

Slit loo roll length ways and stuff with hay. paper bags cause hours of amusement too Or large empty boxes, crisp ones are the best, with the ready made hole in them.

Brill ideas! we chucked the girls in a rolled up lump of corrugated cardboard box the other week and it seems to have disappeared... they also ate their home-made litter tray so we've got to buy one now!

This has turned into an excellent thread. I'm going to add it to the Extremely Useful Threads thread. Old socks stuffed with hay! ;D Old plain t-shirts thrown in to sleep on.

you can also go to your local carpet shop and ask for the rolls inside the carpets to use as chubes which can be munched on and played with also cheaper alternative to the ones sold in pet stores.
Also always check skips and building sites (form the outside obviously) for any piping that isnt being used you could always ask, I have lots of plastic piping from up the road where they lifted the road to lay more pipes etc and just got their off cuts, they are so easy to clean and the pigs love em!

The PVC pipe is a great toy like mentioned above...my dad is a plumer so I have pretty much easy access to that and it's really not that expensive as well!
Not sure if this was mentioned or not but also for tunnels what you can do is take a grid(like the things you use for your C&C cages) and then bend it lightly...don't go to fast or you will brake it...but if you bend it just right then throw or zip tie fleece to it you got yourself a nice little tunnel. Also if you have fleece and take it to a corner and pin it up it's a like a little hide-a-way.

Hi- My first post--this forum seemed a lot warmer and friendlier than some of the others I've joined...
My Snuggles has been going nuts lately over crumpled pieces of newspaper!! He'll play with it in a ball and has taken to using it as an alternative sleeping place (to his wood hut)--kind of like a canopy lately!
Toilet paper rolls are popular and every once in a while, I'll give him a small piece of towel or some rags made of my husband's underwear (knickers) with the elastic removed to play with or snuggle up into...
For when he's out in his exercise pen, I once gave him a cardboard shoebox with doorways cut into it, but he ended up spending his whole playtime hiding in there so I stopped doing that.

Hi- My first post--this forum seemed a lot warmer and friendlier than some of the others I've joined... Welcome to the forum Wendy. This forum is 100% friendly. Everyone is putting a lot of effort into keeping it that way too! I can't be doing with an unfriendly attitude here, and I've been so lucky because all of my members so far have picked up the baton and been amazing role models for how a forum should be. I hope you enjoy yourself and make lots of new friends.

Thanks pp/Kate for the warm welcome! I do appreciate this positive atmosphere. When I got my piggy, my most recent experience with a pet forum had been one for fish (bettas) where most were so sweet, supportive and helpful. I gave up on bettas for a while because I couldn't bear losing them so often. Their lifespan can be as short as 3 months and my longest was over a year. They are like little puppies--come over to say hello to you at the edge of the tank, so I was really devastated losing my little pals. Since my apt. complex charges huge (unaffordable) fees to have a dog or a cat, my husband suggested a guinea pig-- a warm, friendly pet with a longer lifespan...I met one and it won my heart! Although, our progress is so slow and sporatic with getting him to trust us and not run everytime we try to pet him or pick him up (for playpen time or snuggle/lap time), we're hanging in there--trying to "bribe him" with his favorite foods, but sometimes it's so frustrating. I keep telling him that we love him, are so happy to have him here and are not planning to have him for dinner ever, but he has yet to believe it. (I just hope he isn't one piggy who just stays skittish--but maybe he is!! I'm sitting on the floor of my living room right next to Snuggles playing and eating (red peppers and cucumbers) in his playpen.... QUESTION: He seems always to be moving his jaw like he's chewing even when he doesn't seemm to have anything in his mouth---or is he breathing heavily while waiting for the next course?? Is this normal? Or do I need to find a dentist vet? By the way, we did have him examined by a competent, kind gp vet who gave him a good report after giving meds to take care of his mites....maybe I'm just a nervous new mommy... Regards to you here on a summer evening in New York,, Wendy

Guinea pigs do rendomly chew! You may notice him doing it while you're talking, and stop when you stop talking. In this case it sounds like he's just being a pig! Just in case you need it, most vets can do dental work and if for some reason they can't, they can surely recommend one that can. Great to have you here, and I wish I was enjoying your warm summer evening in New York!!! Back to topic, the balls of newspaper are so simple yet so much fun for piggies for some reason. They love to push them around with their noses, chew them, eat them and sleep on them. And it gives your old news paper a second use! I find guinea pigs remarkably good for recycling because they eat their newspaper and toilet roll middle toys as roughage.
