Do you all think guinea pigs learn to respond to their names?
One of the sows I'm getting on Thursday already has a name but I'm thinking of changing it, but don't want to confuse her if she's already used to it!

The sow is 2 years old though, so if they are able to be familiar with names she would be by now! I will probably just keep her name but shorten it

I havent seen Fred & George show any signs that they know their names. Mind you the way I say "Fre- no, George" when I'm talking to George, it's not surprising!

I think they respond to the tone of your voice more than their actual names. Having said that I do have one or two that perk up when I call them by name. As for renaming them, I've got two old sow-bags who are about 5 years old and I think they had French names before we got them. Of course I would still be calling them by their original names if I knew what they were, but since they were rehomed to me about a year ago I had to give them new names as nobody knew the old ones. That's a lot of thought gone into those names Kandi, well done you!!

Yes, they do learn their names, at least most of ours have. Gabriel one of our boars definately knows his name, I can let him run around the front room, call him back and hes comes!!

Well, I'm a huge NASCAR fan so Dega was named after the race track Talladega. My twin sister has a pig named Talla also after Talladega.
Other NASCAR names: Richie after Richmond Raceway Cali after California Speedway Daytona after Daytona International Speedway Denny after my favorite driver, Denny Hamlin
Addison, Avery, and Annabelle were named by my little sister. I don't know where she came up with the names.
So in all we have:
Boars: Dega Richie Cali Daytona Denny Avery
Sows: Addison Talla Annabelle

Another thing I do when I'm short on names is look at baby names sites for ideas. Sometimes they also give you the origins of the names - this is very good as this is how I picked out Yumi for my pure white Abysinnian sow. Yumi means "beautiful" in Japanese. I like these sites: - Baby Names World- The Baby Name Index- BabyNames.com

I guess this is a bit late now but names we've chosen are...
Maklak (rip) - after the noise the aliens in Mars Attacks make Munchkin - as he tries to eat everything including carpet, cupboards, stereo speakers, the furniture... Zippo - almost got called Speedy for 2 reasons; that he is super duper quick and he has a white patch on his nose that makes him look like he's been snorting the naughty stuff! Angel - she's a sheltie and has little flicks of hair on each side that look like little wings
And finally, the babies...
Bo - named after the Face of Bo from Dr Who as he has a gorgeous creamy/buff coloured face all surrounded by black, making his face really stand out. O-Bo - because he has the complete opposite markings of Bo Tony the Tiger - Named by our friend as he is all black with little tan tiger stripes coming up from his belly Choccy - (running out of ideas at this point!) chocolate coloured Fluffy Ginger Pig - because he is!
Choccy may well get a name change as his personality comes out more - he's still a bub, but we couldn't keep calling him 'funny-looking brown pig'...

I liked to use all flora and fauna for my piggies but that has drifted lately. When I had hens they were all soap characters past and present, and the cockrell of course just had to be 'Norris'

I think you need to choose a name which isn't going to be embarrassing when you get called out at the vets! And they can spell.
My last male piggy was called Kreacher (another Harry Potter reader, although I'm a Malfoy and Snape fan myself).
I really really want a couple of girls and to call one Narcissa!

Hi Dragonheartstring - yes I rumbled your secret as soon as I saw your name - great choice! Welcome to the forum. You can probably tell from my GPs names that I'm a Griffindor, but was Snape Sorted too early, one asks? Perhaps we'd better talk about that somewhere else! Have a great time here - I do!
