have heard from this site that you can fill a sock with rice and then heat it up (by the way, how do you do that? ) I was gonna make a homemade teddy thingy for my gp and fill it with bedding but if i filled it with rice and heated it up, would that act as a heater? I would make the toy out of felt or something. Reason for Editing: Changed thread title to better reflect the content - PigPog xxx

I've never heard of this and would be concerned that it would just make the rice really hot.
Is this to try and keep your piggies warm in the winter, as I would suggest you try and keep questions on this to the one thread that has already been created.

You can heat the rice in the microwave I believe. But make sure it's only warm and absolutely not hot before giving the rice-filled-sock to your guinea pig. I'll try this one myself for you sometime over the weekend and get back to you with my findings.

Thank you, the only thing i was concerned with was that the sock might catch fire in the microwave or something.

It would have to be a bit at a time until you reach the required temperature. Let's wait and see if Pigpog tries it over the weekend, and then if she sets light to her microwave the rest of us needn't bother

I haven't had time to try it yet, but it occurred to me that you could probably heat the dry rice in a pyrex jug and then pour it into a sock. That way the sock won't catch fire in the microwave. I'll do the sock tomorrow.

Hiya! (Long time no see everyone!!) I've got a wheat pack which I bought in a chemist and you heat up in the microwave for 2 mins on high, but you have to wrap it in a teatowel first. I've been doing this for years and only burnt a hole in the teatowel once and that's because I heated it for more than 2 mins!! When it's cold, I sit on the sofa with it on my lap and the piggies LOVE sittng on it - definitely give it a try! Sarah

I believe if you just microwave for only like 30 seconds or less. Not very long at all just enough for the rice to get warm.

Amanda has one that she uses for her piggies and says that they like it to. I have never left one in with the piggies as they can get cold fast so i just put in lots of hay. Tanya

Thank you everyone, ill remember the wheat pack thing. And also with the sock, thats what i thought, heat the rice first. Thank you everyone for all your suggestions. One more thing though- how hot would it have to be because i would want it to keep them warm but i also wouldn't want to burn them.
